Having good product images on Amazon is by far one of the most important ways you can attract more customers. The main image alone would account for more than 80% of your Amazon sales and so, getting this right is mission critical. In fact, getting your images right will go a long way in reducing the cost with your PPC campaign.
Even at this stage of Amazon FBA, there are still sellers who use low-quality photos to sell their products who are doing reasonably well. Use this chance and make sure to list your products with good quality images.
If you are looking for ways on how to optimize your Amazon product image, here are a few simple steps.
1. Comply with the Technical Image Requirements of Amazon or Employ Category Best Practices
To successfully optimize your Amazon product image, you need to follow the rules set out by Amazon. You can find them here: Amazon Product Image Requirements.
When listing your products, you have to comply with the image size, image frame, background color, and image type. If you won’t follow, Amazon will reject your photos.
The standard image size should be 1,000 pixels in height and width. For the frame, the product image should cover 85% of it. The background color is recommended to be white for all products for the main image. Finally, the image type can either be PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GIF
Amazon also state that you should use real photos as well for your main image. If your supplier can provide you the actual photos of the products you are selling, you should ask for it.
Else, you have to take the actual photos of your inventory so you can follow this important step. Smart customers can easily detect if the photos are fake or real. If you use high-quality and real images, you will likely attract more smart customers.
I know, I know… there are some competitors out there who doesn’t follow those rules and are doing fairly well for themselves. 3D renderings on the main image are everywhere and yet, to the untrained eye, it is difficult to spot.
Amazon hasn’t come down hard on this rule (yet) as in some categories, having a non-compliant main image bring in more sales and thus, Amazon earns more in fees.
This is a grey area for some categories at this point and I will leave it up to you to decide if you want to follow the “best” practice of your competitors. Personally, even if Amazon starts going down on this, it will affect everyone and even so, it will just probably be a slap on the hand. Nothing too drastic seeing how this directly affects their bottom-line.
2. Fill Up All Images Slot In Your Listing
It’s always recommended that you put more than one photo when you are selling a product. There’s a total of 7 image slot you can fill that is directly visible on your listing, so do make sure to maximize them! (There’s actually 9 slots but the last 2 will only be reveal when a customer view the images in the expanded view)
Make sure that your photos differ in angle. You can post the front view, side view, top view, and bottom view of your product so your potential customers will be able to examine the actual images before they purchase.
This is your way to tell your customers about the full specifications of your products. If you can use 4 or more photos, put them in your listing. Don’t forget that this is a part of image optimization and to make your listing attractive to potential customers too. Feel free to show off your well designed product packaging in the images too for that extra uniqueness!
Provide important details about the product you are selling. Some sellers on Amazon have descriptions even in the photos of their products. They put the size, dimensions, uses of the products, materials used and so on. Your photos don’t have to contain too many texts.
The descriptions can be brief and precise. It’s like telling your customers the different parts of your products through photos. Although you can list down important details in another portion of the Amazon product page, you are free to utilize the image portion to make unique differentiation about your product. Believe it or not, this also helps protect you against hijackers and copycats!
I would recommend the 7 images to compromise of the following
- Main Image (Product Only Image)
- Measurement Image and/or Technical Specs
- Product In Use Images
- Lifestyle Images
And as a bonus to brand registered sellers with an active trademark (You can register for a trademark easily), the last image slot can be switched to a video that displays your product in action. Use this opportunity to get a 30 to 45 second video in for greater results.
3. Use PickFu to Determine Which Main Images the Customers Prefer
PickFu in case you don’t already know, is an online market research company that gives Amazon sellers easy access to customer opinions on anything!
Does Image A or Image B get more clicks? Pickfu can easily and quickly get that poll out to Amazon Prime members or any audience type and your customers will tell you which one they prefer themselves. You can read my little review about PickFu here.
Visit PickFu and give it a try. You may be surprised by the answer. We also got a neat little discount code which you can use for 1st time users.
4. Good Practice Examples
We all love practical examples that we can take inspiration from don’t we?
Well, here’s a compilation of good practices that we can definitely use in our own Amazon listing to make it shine! These are random listings that I found to be doing well and had great images which you can choose to follow.
Keep it Simple: Main Features Portrayed Simply
Displaying Quantity Information Clearly
Product Technical Specs Displayed Cleanly
Fill Your Product Up With Actual Items In Use (Not Amazon Compliant but works in this Category)
Use Different Scenarios For Product In Use: Helps to Highlight the Features
Do not be afraid to explore and experiment! Up till this day, I still find myself tweaking and playing around with my images; especially the main images through split testing. You never know what make the customers buy your product over the others, until they tell you through the sales or through PickFu. Nonetheless, its a satisfying to know that a simple image change can increase sales.
